Outpatient Addiction Treatment: Finding the Best Help for Your Recovery

Outpatient addiction treatment is helpful for those who are ready to receive care while living at home. It allows you to maintain some of your daily routine, including work or school, while attending rehab.

Outpatient addiction treatment works best for people who have finished inpatient care. It is also a good option for those who are stable enough to return to daily life outside of rehab.

When you decide to seek help from Milton Jefferson, we will make sure you receive the right level of care for your needs. But knowing the different care levels can help you feel more at ease when you choose to get treatment for a substance use disorder.

What Is Outpatient Addiction Treatment?

Outpatient rehab is a level of care that addresses addiction without requiring you to live at a treatment center. While this makes it less immersive than inpatient treatment, it is no less effective.

This level of care offers flexibility that is not available in residential care. Outpatient addiction treatment allows you to live at home while attending rehab during the day. However, while at rehab, you will receive intensive therapy and treatment to help you continue your recovery journey.

Where Outpatient Rehab Fits Into Care

Addiction treatment involves several levels of care. Typically, a full continuum of care looks like the following:

  1. Medical Detox
  2. Residential Inpatient Treatment
  3. Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)
  4. Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
  5. Outpatient Treatment

Types of Outpatient Programs

Outpatient rehab is a broad level of care that includes specific types of rehabilitation. The main types of outpatient addiction treatment are partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our partial hospitalization program typically comes after medical detox or inpatient rehab. It can also be the first step in treatment. You will attend treatment 5 to 7 days per week for 4 to 8 hours a day.

PHP at Milton Jefferson offers an immersive level of care, providing clinical oversight and structure. This type of outpatient addiction treatment is best for those who need close monitoring as they recover from substance use.

Throughout your time in our PHP, our clinical team provides medical supervision, making sure you are comfortable and safe. We check in with you often during the program to make sure your medications, therapy, and treatment plan work for you.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program offers support with a more flexible schedule than PHP. This allows you to transition back into life after intensive, inpatient treatment. You can engage with work, school, and family life while remaining connected to your care. You will attend treatment 3 to 5 days a week for 3 to 4 hours per day.

Although IOP is not as immersive as PHP, it still offers the clinical support you need throughout your recovery. If you face a relapse trigger or emotional crisis between sessions, we will help you through it. We are here for you, even outside your treatment hours. IOP at Milton Jefferson is best suited for those stepping down from PHP or for those entering treatment with a stable home environment.

While you are in our IOP, you can apply what you learn in treatment in your everyday life. You can practice new coping strategies in real situations, rather than just in a clinical setting. This helps build the self-awareness and consistency that you need to maintain sobriety.

Outpatient Program (OP)

Standard outpatient treatment is the least intensive level of care in the addiction treatment continuum. It typically involves 1 to 2 sessions per week. You can continue to have individual therapy, group counseling, or ongoing psychiatric visits for medication management.

Outpatient care focuses on relapse prevention, medication management, and keeping you connected to support as your recovery progresses.

This level of care is best suited for you if you have completed a more intensive program, such as PHP or IOP, and are ready to maintain your recovery with lighter support. It can also be appropriate if you have a stable home environment and a lower level of clinical need while entering treatment for the first time.

Continued outpatient care helps bridge the gap between structured treatment and independent recovery.

Is Outpatient Treatment Right for Me?

The level of care you receive is determined by a clinical assessment during the intake process. But it is important to be aware of how each level of care can help you. Outpatient treatment may be a good fit for you if you:

  • Have completed medical detox or inpatient treatment and are ready to transition to a lower level of care
  • Have a stable and supportive home environment
  • Are managing a mild to moderate substance use disorder
  • Can maintain the commitment and accountability that outpatient programs require

Our intake team will guide you through the assessment process. We will work with you to find the right level of care for your needs.

  • Individual Therapy
  • Psychoeducation Groups
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI)
