Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)

For many individuals facing addiction, Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is the bridge between where they are and where they want to be. At Milton Jefferson, we offer Medication-Assisted Treatment as a part of our addiction treatment programs. We combine FDA-approved medications with compassionate, evidence-based care to give patients the strongest possible foundation for lasting sobriety.

Medical Detox

What is Medication Assisted Treatment?

Medication-Assisted Treatment, or MAT, is a clinically proven approach to treating substance use disorders. It combines carefully selected medications with counseling and behavioral therapies. Rather than relying on willpower alone, MAT works with the body and brain to reduce cravings, ease withdrawal symptoms, and restore balance so patients can focus on healing.

MAT is not a shortcut or a substitute for recovery. It is recovery. Decades of research confirm that Medication-Assisted Treatment significantly improves treatment retention, reduces the risk of relapse, lowers overdose mortality, and supports long-term sobriety. The goal is always whole-person wellness.

The Importance of Medical Detox in Drug and Alcohol Recovery

For many patients, the first and most daunting step toward recovery is detox. Withdrawal from certain substances can be physically painful. In some cases, withdrawal is even medically dangerous. Attempting to detox without medical supervision carries serious risk.

That’s why medical detox is the essential first phase of treatment for many individuals.
Under proper medical supervision, detox becomes safer, more comfortable, and more effective. Our clinical team monitors patient health around the clock, manages withdrawal symptoms as they arise, and uses medications when appropriate to minimize discomfort and reduce medical risk.

What Conditions Can MAT Treat

MAT is an effective option for treating a range of substance use disorders. At Milton Jefferson, we use supervised, FDA-approved medication to support recovery from:

  • Opioid Addiction
  • Alcoholism
  • Benzodiazepine
  • Addiction
  • Stimulant Addiction
  • And more

Our team takes the time to understand each patient’s situation to determine if MAT is necessary. This evaluation is a critical step in determining the safest, most effective course of treatment.

Medications Used to Support Addiction Detox

FDA-approved medications are at the heart of MAT. A common concern among patients and families is whether using medication in recovery simply trades one substance for another. This is a misconception worth addressing directly. The medications used in MAT are prescribed at controlled doses, monitored by medical professionals, and chosen specifically to stabilize brain chemistry, not disrupt it.

In our inpatient setting, the focus is on initiating treatment safely and identifying the most appropriate long-term medication option for each patient. Each medication works differently depending on the substance being treated, and our clinical team will determine which option or combination is most appropriate.

Under MAT, we may use:

  • Subutex (Buprenorphine): Reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing a high.
  • Suboxone (Buprenorphine/Naloxone): Combines buprenorphine with naloxone to reduce cravings while deterring misuse.
  • Sublocade (Buprenorphine extended-release injection): A once-monthly injectable form of buprenorphine that removes the need for daily dosing.
  • Brixadi (Buprenorphine extended-release injection): A weekly or monthly injectable buprenorphine option, providing flexible dosing to match each patient’s treatment needs.
  • Naltrexone (Vivitrol): Blocks the effects of opioids entirely with no risk of physical dependence. Available as a daily pill or monthly injection, it is a strong option for individuals who have completed detox.

The Role of Evidence-Based Therapy in MAT

Medication is only part of the equation. Lasting recovery requires addressing the emotional, psychological, and behavioral parts of addiction. At Milton Jefferson, every MAT program is integrated with therapeutic support. Our therapeutic approaches include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps patients identify the thought patterns and behaviors that fuel substance use and develop healthier ways of responding to triggers.

Motivational Interviewing (MI): MI guides individuals to explore and strengthen their own reasons for change, building the internal motivation that makes recovery more sustainable.

Individual Counseling: One-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist give patients a private space to process their experiences, set goals, and work through the personal challenges that accompany recovery.

Group Therapy: Group therapy connects individuals with peers who understand what they’re going through, reducing isolation and building mutual accountability.

Family Therapy: Addiction affects the whole family. These sessions help repair relationships, improve communication, and strengthen the support system patients return home to.
